Washing Coils.....

I started my locs via coils and learned how to wash by peeping out the sista's w/ sistalocs... :o)

I started mine with coils and washed like 2 weeks in tothe locing process. This is what I recommend for washing starters:
* Put some shampoo in a spray bottle and dilute w/ water
* Band your hair together (put a bunch of little ponytails all over your head) be sure to put rubberbands close to the ends of your banded locs
* Rinse
*Spray the shampoo mixture all over your head and massage your scalp using your fingertips
* Rinse, respray and wash the actual ponytail (locs)
*Rinse, Rinse Rinse Want to make sure there is no shampoo residue left in your locs. Trust me you'll pay for it later..
If you choose to condition, do the same thing with a different spray bottle. Just be sure to have more water than conditoner. Some people say DON"T condition, others say condition. I say you have to do what is best for your hair. Or if you don't want to use a conditioner per say, u can always do an ACV rinse(apple cider vinegar). all you would do is put 1:2 (1 cup ACV, 2 cups water) in a spray bottle or a large cup, pour it over your head, allow it to sit for a few minutes and then rinse rinse rinse. This is one of those things that you have to tweak to your liking, but I think a good starting point is the 1:2 ratio.

As far as shampoo goes, what type of shampoo did you use prior to locs? The same will be good for you while locing. I personally use the Jamaican Mango and Lime tingle shampoo cause I like the way it tingles my scalp. Prior to that I was using garlic shampoo. I have some Suave Clarifying that I am waiting to use as soon as my JML is out. :o) I wash my hair like every week now since it has been so hot and my scalp sweats like no tomorrow. However, I only twist once a month.

Twisting products for me are still trial and error. Before locs I used Isoplus molding creme to do my coils. I started my locs with that, but I have only used it once since starting. I really like this product called twists and locs honey wax (super). I know people say nothing waxy, no beeswax, etc etc, but it is what works for me. Like I said earlier it is whatever will work for you.

I retwist my roots and palm roll the length of my loc. In the beginning I would use my fingers to twist all the way down the shaft of my loc because I didnt know how to palm roll correctly. I asked a mature locer to show me and I've been doing that since. I have tried latching, but i dont really like it. Granted when I retwist it may only last a few days but I'm ok with that cause I keep mine curled a lot. Some people want to get their hair retwisted and then think its supposed to last for weeks; not.... anyway, thats about it for me.
